Living on the Sliema front

Sliema has and always will be one of Malta’s most desirable addresses. The area is popular with locals and especially foreigners and there are several reasons for this: it is central; it is cosmopolitan and offers everything one could dream of. With a beautiful and long seafront promenade, this is the place where joggers, those merely out for a leisurely stroll, families and tourists come to see and be seen. The promenade also offers access to many rocky beaches which are used for picnics, to sunbathe and have a swim during the hot summers.

Properties on the Sliema seafront

The road along the seafront all the way from Gzira to St Julian’s is thronged with apartment blocks, maisonettes, townhouses and even the odd palazzo. A concerned effort is underway to preserve the heritage of the area, as many of the original, glamorous townhouses that stood shoulder to shoulder on many parts of the coastal road have been replaced by modern apartment blocks, hotels and shops. The last existing ones are to retain their character and facades as it is now protected and listed. Any new buildings are required to be sympathetically designed with the character of the area in mind, as to harmoniously blend in with their surroundings.

Owning an apartment in Sliema has become the dream of many and those that have properties here are considered very lucky. Prices for this popular area have increased dramatically the last few years and every new release on the market is literally snapped up within days. Older apartments are always renovated and updated to bring them into line, having all the latest modern conveniences a discerning buying public have come to expect from homes in this area.

Having an apartment in Sliema is quite literally a dream come true: you have some of the best restaurants, shopping malls, cafes, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues within walking distance, not to even mention favourite beaches. On the northern end of Sliema you will find Balluta Bay, and then there are Exiles, Fond Ghadir Beach, Sliema Beach and Qui-Si-Sana to mention just a few. Many of the seafront hotels offer access to exclusive swimming areas and beach clubs to their guests including all the perks such as bar and food services to patrons. The area of Tigne Point is considered to be the “home of millionaires” in Malta and apartments here offer every convenience you can dream of, topped by spectacular views from every room, no matter what apartment you live in. Tigne Point offers owners private walkways and gardens, access to the sea and discreet entry to Malta’s premier shopping destination, The Point.

What to do in Sliema?

Sliema is indeed a shopper’s paradise: the area around Sliema Ferries and the bordering Strand is the home to major international brands, with many fine dining restaurants offering ardent shoppers the opportunity to have a break, sip on a latté and watch the world go by. Many roads lead off from the Ferries area over the rise to the other side of Sliema, so it is very easy to walk everywhere although Sliema’s footprint covers quite a large area.

Expats travelling to Malta

Sliema is a favourite with expats, i-Gaming companies and many other businesses due to its prestigious, central location. As the area is also the premier gateway to all that Malta has to offer, tourism plays a huge role and Sliema is a hotspot for bed and breakfast concerns, boutique hotels, student accommodation, residences and well-known hotels such as The Plaza, The Palace, The Sliema Marine Hotel, The Diplomat, the Preluna and more than a hundred other short-term places where one can stay. Sliema Ferries is a premier departure point for ferry cruises to Valletta, Comino, the Three Cities and Grand Harbour and on most days during the tourist season, Sliema is abuzz with excited visitors queuing to board one of the many vessels moored along the quayside.

Sliema is known for its great mix of building and housing types: here you will find apartments, penthouses, maisonettes and townhouses all standing shoulder to shoulder, but one thing is for certain: living along the seafront of Sliema is a privilege. The scenic beauty, the proximity to everything one could wish for and the area’s relaxed and cosmopolitan culture all makes for a heady mixture that seduces and bewitches…one cannot help but fall head over heels in love with living along the seafront in Sliema, Malta.
