Gozo, Fort Chambray

Description

Fort Chambray, Gozo

Fort Chambray is a magnificent, historic fortress located on Gozo which overlooks Mgarr Harbour. The views from here are spectacular and Fort Chambray is one of the island’s most famous landmarks.

Historical Background of Fort Chambray

Built in the 18th century, Fort Chambray stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of the Order of Saint John, commonly known as the Knights of Malta. The fort took its name from Jacques-François de Chambray who was a French knight of Malta and from 1749 to 1750 he was appointed as the governor of the island of Gozo by the Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca. Commencing construction in 1749 and reaching completion in 1771, Fort Chambray served the crucial role of defending the island of Gozo against potential threats, with a particular focus on safeguarding against possible incursions by the Ottoman Empire and pirates.

The architectural style of Fort Chambray reflects a harmonious blend of military and Baroque influences, showcasing bastions, curtain walls and an expansive courtyard. Among its structures are old officers’ quarters, gun emplacements and more.

Throughout its existence, Fort Chambray has undergone various transformations and refurbishments. In recent times, segments of the fort have been meticulously restored and repurposed into residential properties. Today, Fort Chambray stands proudly as a historical landmark, inviting visitors to delve into Malta’s military history and architectural legacy. Additionally, it contributes to the scenic charm of Gozo’s alluring landscape.

Special Designated Area Status

Fort Chambray enjoys Special Designated Area status, meaning that foreign investors, whether they are EU or Non-EU, can purchase as many units as they want without the need for an AIP (Acquisition of Immovable Property) permit. Due to this special status, the units can also be rented out immediately without any restrictions.

Construction Phases

The construction and refurbishment at Fort Chambray comprises three distinct phases.

  • In Phase 1, a number of villas and maisonettes, totalling 74, were constructed. Some of these properties feature private pools, while all owners have access to a large communal pool.
  • Moving on to Phase 2, there are 64 two-bedroom single units and 21 two or three-bedroom duplex units. Ground floor properties in this segment have their own terraced spaces and most duplexes have privately owned roofs. The predominantly south-facing orientation provides excellent roof gardening opportunities with unobstructed sea views. Additionally, some north-facing units offer panoramic countryside views.
  • In the future, phase 3 will complete the Fort Chambray project. It involves the restoration of the Knights’ historic barracks and the Polverista, formerly used for arms and ammunition storage. It is planned that the latter will be effectively converted into commercial spaces, housing retail outlets, food and beverage establishments and ample space for various entertainment outlets. Phase 3 will culminate in the construction of a further 200 residential apartments and a 100-bed boutique spa hotel.
