As one of the most popular Maltese villages among locals and tourists, Mellieha has much to offer. From fascinating historic sites to stunning sandy beaches, it’s a treat for the eyes as well as your Facebook Stories!

The team at Frank Salt Real Estate – a leading estate agency in Malta – has helped many clients find their ideal home in this beloved location, so here are a few things we think make Mellieha so special.

1. Life’s a Beach

Few locals in Malta spend their childhoods without weekend trips along the northern Coast Road in destination of the island’s largest beach, Ghadira Bay. Having been awarded the coveted Blue Flag status, Ghadira’s crisp, blue waters stretch out for almost a mile, with the beach itself offering plenty of facilities such as refreshment kiosks, sun lounges and umbrellas.

Also worth visiting is Armier Bay, made up of two different beaches (Armier and Little Armier). Surrounded by the sparkling Mediterranean sea, Armier Bay tends to be quieter than other Maltese beaches.

2. Aye, Aye, Sailor!

Originally the film set of the 1980’s movie Popeye which starred Robin Williams, Popeye Village has since been converted to a fun park. Visitors can enjoy rides, shows, museums and other forms of entertainment. Not to mention the cute, colourful set buildings that make for great photographs!

3. Did You Know?

The name “Mellieha” is derived from the Arabic word for salt, which in turn originates from the ancient Punic-Roman salt pans in Mellieha Bay.

4. It’s Bursting with History

Mellieha is home to one of the largest WWII underground shelters in Malta, located just a few steps away from the Parish Square – a definite must-see for all history aficionados. Just across the road lies a hidden underground shrine in the form of a little grotto, where over the years, visitors have left prayers, candles and letters of gratitude. And we cannot possibly leave out the Red Tower – built in 1649 by the Knights of St. John, its distinct hue is not only responsible for its Game of Thrones-esque name, but can also be seen from all across the village.

5. Welcome to the Neighbourhood

Due to its beautiful countryside and unique surroundings, many foreigners and locals alike have bought property in Mellieha, either as a permanent residency or a summer home. The Santa Maria Estate is host to prestigious villas and holiday apartments, and the area itself is full of mini-markets, pharmacies, supermarkets, sports clubs and shops. The village also boasts a range of penthouses, detached bungalows, apartments and maisonettes.
