Nowadays bathrooms are expected to be sparse, minimalist, and functional in design. This counts in your favour as you can clear, clean up, remove and declutter this very important room to look its best and let it become one of the biggest assets of your rental property. No matter how big or small, we share our top tips on how to give your bathroom a makeover without breaking the bank.
Floors
If you have a wooden floor in good condition, it may just need a clean-up such as sanding and revarnishing. If you have a tiled floor, replace chipped or cracked tiles and here the secret is to not only replace the odd tile but also try and attain an overall patchwork that looks like this was your design intention from the start. Other options are cork and laminate tiles.
Faux Marble and Stone Coatings
Modern, ultra-thin stone lookalike vinyl achieves astonishing results with the advancement of high-resolution digital printing. Slate, marble, limestone, and granite vinyl are indistinguishable from the real thing and all are hard-wearing, waterproof, looks stunning, and budget-friendly. This can be used for backsplashes, countertops, shower floors, and walls.
Refinish instead of replace
If your bathtub and basins are in good order but just look dated or stained, have it refinished professionally instead of replacing it. If well done, it will last for years.
Refresh, re-grout, and touch up
Get rid of all stained grouting and sealants around tubs, tiles, and basins and have it redone. You will be surprised how something so simple can uplift the entire look of a bathroom!
Taps, faucets, and mixers
This is another top tip to update your bathroom instantly: replace taps, faucets, and mixers with matching, modern sets. These don’t need to be expensive and very good ones can be found in most hardware shops’ sales at a fraction of the original price.
Cabinets and cupboards
Instead of ripping everything out, keep the carcass and replace the doors and handles. Paint the remaining frames first to match the doors you intend to use.
Paint
Most bathrooms are small in scale and most of the space, including the walls, will be taken up by mirrors and other fittings. You therefore will need a relatively small amount of paint to refresh the room. Take your time and make sure the detailing around basins, taps, shelves, and the like are flawless.
Vanities
If you have to replace the vanity, buy and upscale/repaint/refinish an old dresser first and then crown it with a stone or marble top, if it does not already have one. Have the holes to fit the hardware professionally cut and drilled.
