right paint for your home

Whether you are renting out a property, most of us like to have our properties looking good. This can easily be achieved on a modest budget by updating and refreshing the paintwork for walls, ceilings and trim. Did you know, as a landlord, a fresh coat of paint and refreshing your apartment’s interior can help you in finding a tenant more quickly?

On the other hand, as someone who rents a property long-term, you may want to surround yourself with a colour scheme you feel suits your personality and will aid in making your rented property a home where you can relax, de-stress and revive.

We have put together some pointers to assist any tenant or landlord in this quest to make a property look its best, using paint as the chosen, budget-friendly medium.

The Top Tip when Choosing a Paint Colour

Many people find choosing wall colours a daunting prospect. Make it easier for yourself by starting with a colour you like and love. Decorating styles come and go and you will have to live with the colour you choose for some time, so it the best choice by far is to surround yourself with a colour you feel comfortable with.

But first, what colours say about you in short

Red: Did you know that red stimulates one’s appetite? It is also the colour of drama and indulgence, of excitement.

Blue: Down to earth and easy-going, most men’s favourite colour.

Green: Green denotes tradition and stability

Yellow: Happy and cheerful and uplifting.

Neutrals: This can be greys, taupe, magnolia and more. The darker the neutral, the more formal the personality. People who like neutrals tend to be a little bit more conservative.

Our Top Tips

Use colour charts

Paint shops have colour charts with tones of your favourite colours. Choose a very light, if not the lightest version of your favourite colour for walls overall and then a darker tone for an accent wall or feature.

Get inspired beforehand

This is the age of the internet. Use Pinterest, Instagram and Google image searches to find and collect images of room treatments and colour combinations you like.

Be daring!

If you are conservative by nature, don’t think you have to end up with a room that is dull and boring, so use a neutral wall colour with a whiter shade on skirtings, architraves, cornices and trim to add some style and class to any room.

The Age of the App

With the advancement of technology, there’s a large selection of apps available for download that instantly changes the colour of walls and trims in a variety of different picture settings.

Start a storyboard

If you have a piece of fabric or even wallpaper you like, choose the most subtle of colours from this for larger wall areas and the boldest colour for accents.

Do the test

Have small colour samples made up and paint test patches at home to see what it looks like when dry, in real life before you buy large quantities of paint.

Be disciplined

It very tempting to grab as many colour swatches at the paint store as you can, but don’t as it may just lead you into making the wrong choice or pairing and paint stores will not ever take back custom-mixed paint.

Do the maths

If a room is 5m X 5m, multiply and the total comes to 25m2 …so if 2 coats are needed, this comes to 50m2 which will require about 4 litres of paint. Subtract and windows and doors from the square meterage.
