Simon Burlo Frank Salt Real Estate

With over two decades of dedicated customer-facing business experience, such as marketing, events and sales, spanning more than two decades in London, Simon finally decided in 2023 to make Malta his home. With deep ancestral roots in the Sliema area, Simon joined Frank Salt Real Estate at its Sliema Letting Office. With a passion for people, he is committed to ensuring all clients’ rental journeys are not just successful ones, but also enjoyable. He prides himself on being friendly, approachable and diligent and thrives on meaningful interactions, open communication and fulfilling people’s needs when it comes to renting a property. When he’s not assisting clients, you’ll likely find him indulging in his love for swimming and embracing the great outdoors.

Growing up in London, how do you think the city influenced your personality and work ethic?

London is a busy place, even hectic at times… I think growing up in these surroundings spills into your style of working; it pushes you into a fast-paced approach and the way you apply yourself.

What brought you to Malta and what made you decide to stay and choose a career in real estate?

My father grew up in Sliema, so I have spent time here nearly every year of my entire life and it has always felt as much my home as London did, sometimes even more. I always knew that I wanted to live here at some point and a few years ago, the timing felt just right. Given the pace of the local property market, especially the letting sector, what better career to be in? It’s a field where I truly feel at home.

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give your younger self?

I like this question, something I think about quite often. My advice would be: “You are now, where you wanted to be; keep moving forward and take time to appreciate your achievements in the present”.

What’s a common misconception people have about renting in Malta?

One misconception I often encounter is people’s perception with regards to the size of the island. Our localities here are so small that limiting yourself to one particular area can lead to missing out on the opportunity of finding your dream home. I always promote keeping an open mind as this is when you may well find yourself being pleasantly surprised!

What’s the most rewarding part of helping people find a rental home?

This one is easy! The happiness and glow on a client’s face when you have matched them with everything they wanted. For sure, it’s the happiness you can bring to others that is the most rewarding.

What qualities do you think are essential for someone to be successful in property letting?

Hard work, consistency, positivity, empathy and sincerity.

Do you have a personal approach or philosophy when it comes to working with landlords and tenants?

Absolutely. Always treat everyone with kindness, respect, honesty, transparency and always be sure to listen more than you speak.

How do you balance work and your love for nature in Malta’s busy real estate scene?

You have to allocate time for yourself. In this industry it can be tricky to do, but without that balance, you can’t be the best version of yourself – either when it comes to your working hours or your free time. I’d say it’s one of the harder disciplines to apply.

What personal habits do you have that help you stay organized and focused in your role?

Simply, do it now or not at all. For me at least anyway, this is the main habit I am always working on.

If you could design a dream outdoor space, what would it look like?

Green. VERY green. It is probably one of the things I miss most about London. Nothing would bring me more joy than to see more dedicated green parks and areas in some of the built-up localities such as Sliema, St Julian’s, Gzira etc. I feel this would really improve quality of life, having a boost or recharge amongst nature.

Is there an activity you’ve always wanted to try in Malta but haven’t yet?

Scuba diving! Malta has some of the best diving sites in Europe, yet it is something I have never tried. I love the sea, so this summer I will be spending time under the water, not just in it.

What does your perfect weekend look like?

Swimming, finding things to jump off into the sea, making music, spending time outside enjoying many of the beautiful surroundings that these wonderful islands have to offer.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Energetic, positive, inquisitive.

What’s one thing you do each morning that sets the tone for your day?

I set aside at least half an hour with absolutely no screen time, where I can be appreciative of all things and absolutely calm.
