Flats keep getting smaller and the demand for rented properties keeps getting bigger. However, a space need not be large to look so. Here are some hacks on making your property look larger and airier than its square metre footage suggests.
Colour Scheme
Light and bright walls are more reflective, making a space feel open and airy, which helps maximise the effect created by natural light. Dark colours, on the other hand, tend to absorb light, making the space look smaller than it is. Therefore, use light colours on the walls and floors, and you could also go a step farther and paint your wall trim and mouldings in a lighter colour than your walls. By doing so, the walls appear farther back, making your room seem even bigger. Other than for the purpose of visual enlargement, it also makes sense to go for neutral tones in a property to let to fit all tastes.
Lighting
If you have access to natural light, bring it into your home through large windows. If not, simply add some creative effects using lighting fixtures.
Mirrors & Glass
Speaking of lighting, mirrors – when strategically placed – can do wonders. They are the best way to reflect light and therefore create the illusion of a larger room. Angling your mirrors toward the room’s focal point to give the illusion of depth or placing them near a window to reflect the outdoors is especially effective, and can give the room a more open feel. Whether glass or transparent acrylic, clear furniture can also reduce the visual chaos of a room as they avoid taking up too much visual space.
Buy and Arrange Furniture Wisely
Sometimes, furniture can take up a lot of space and as a result, makes the room look cramped. Preferably, opt for multi-functional furniture or pieces such as ottomans, beds and coffee tables with hidden storage. Furthermore, furniture with fabric-covered bases are far from ideal for small spaces as they can feel heavy and boxy, so go for sofas and chairs with exposed legs.
Avoid completely pushing furniture up against the wall; leaving even just a few inches in between the wall and your bigger items can make the space look more open and less cramped. Another great trick of making your property look larger is by drawing the eye upward; accentuate with high-standing floor lamps and tall plants, and hang taller curtain drapes higher, ensuring the bottom still reaches the floor.
Go Big or Go Home
In small rooms, one large couch instead of multiple smaller pieces actually decreases the cluttered look. Similarly, many interior designers suggest that decorative accents smaller than a cantaloupe melon crowd a room, so opt for fewer but bigger art pieces and decorations.
