The Old Church of Santa Venera underwent significant historical transformations: originally constructed in 1473, it underwent expansion in 1500, reconstruction between 1658 and 1688 and further renovations in the 19th century. In 1610, Grandmaster Alof de Wignacourt played a pivotal role in funding the construction of the area’s landmark, the Wignacourt Aqueduct. This aqueduct served the purpose of transporting water from springs in Rabat and Dingli to the capital city of Valletta, passing through several towns, including Santa Venera. The project was successfully completed in 1615.
Constructed around 1730, Casa Leoni, also recognized as Palazzo Manoel, features a remarkable history. The palace, complemented by an expansive garden, opened a portion of its grounds to the public in 1977, now known as Romeo Romano Gardens.
In terms of real estate, Santa Venera offers diverse housing options. The property market includes apartments, maisonettes, townhouses and traditional Maltese houses. Close by one will find the area of Mriehel with its Central Business District, a bustling hub that is home to some of Malta’s leading companies. This makes Santa Venera an ideal place to live if you work in or around the Central Business District.
Santa Venera is characterised by a mix of residential and commercial areas, providing a balanced and convenient urban environment. The town has a range of amenities, including schools, churches and recreational spaces, making it an attractive place for especially families. Furthermore, its central location on the island also offers convenient access to other parts of Malta.
A number of very good educational institutions can be found in Santa Venera such as Saint Elias College, St Michael’s College, The Vincenze Bugeja Conservatory and Dun Xand Cortis Primary School. With many doctors, dentists, shops and restaurants, suppliers of all kinds and excellent public transport routes criss-crossing the entire Santa Venera, the area has become sought-after as it is conveniently located and very affordable whether you own or rent a property here.
