Madliena was also formerly known as Madalena and it is an area that is part of greater Swieqi. Prior to that it used to be considered as part of the adjacent town of Gharghhur. The area actually takes its name from the well-known chapel of St Mary Magdalene which was built around 1490. There is also a well-known 17th Century tower called Madliena Tower. The tower is located on the coastline but now falls under the jurisdiction limits of Pembroke. What many people do not know is that on the arms of Swieqi a red letter “M” can be seen… and this actually represents the area of Madliena!
Till the 60’s the area was predominantly rural and consisted mostly of farms, but today the area is a prestigious residential enclave. Madliena is now the setting and backdrop for stunning villas, luxury apartments, maisonettes, penthouses and sprawling bungalows. Property for sale in Madliena is extremely coveted and sought-after and the whole area is often regarded as one of the most upmarket and exclusive locations in the whole of Malta.
