Għajnsielem is located on the southern tip of the island of Gozo, Malta and has a population of just over 3000. After disembarking the ferry from Malta to Gozo at Mgarr, it is the first town greeting any visitors to the island. This municipality also includes one of Malta’s main attractions, the Island of Comino. The name Għajnsielem is derived from a spring located in the area and in the 1700s wash basins and water fountains were built in and around the flow of the spring.
Notable buildings include Fort Chambray and Lourdes Chapel, as well as the notable parish church bearing the same name as the locality. A main attraction of the area is Mgarr harbour itself which remains a hive of activity all year round. Several watch towers are located in the area and Għajnsielem has become a popular place to buy property due to its easy access to the ferry services to Malta, but also due to its rural charm and being the gateway to the rest of Gozo.
For any visitor, the area is rich in historic places to visit and offers unparalleled views over the channel to both Malta and Comino.
