What to expect from a maisonette

Not all maisonettes are on ground level and can be on the second or even third level in some cases, but all will have a separate ground level front entrance door, providing privacy to come and go for its owners. Many maisonettes will also have access to a back yard or garden area and some may even have communal pools and outdoor areas. Those situated on the second or higher floors will usually have their own roof terraces. Variations of this building types found on Gozo are duplex and solitary maisonettes.

Maisonettes are usually regarded as very traditional

Maisonettes can have up to four bedrooms, making it the ideal home for larger families and urban professionals and can be found in most villages and towns. Off-street parking and garages are a huge bonus should any maisonette come with this, but it is rare and will add to the price. As many of these were constructed up to a hundred years or more ago, prospective buyers should have them thoroughly evaluated prior to purchase.

Older maisonettes were built with traditional materials such as limestone and almost always include the best original features of the period which can include hand crafted woodwork, beautiful balustrades and staircases, traditional tiles and architraves and high ceilings. Most of the rooms are separate in unconverted maisonettes, but many have been modernised to the open-plan format preferred today, with all the latest mod cons.  It is the ideal smaller but spacious town home for the romantic in all of us.
