About Mgarr (Gozo)

The town of Mġarr, Gozo, is on the southern tip of this small Maltese island. It grew up around the shallow harbour which shares its name. Boats taking people to and from Malta started as early as the 1200’s and a basic fishing industry was already operational. Naturally the surrounds of the harbour area was developed first in the next few hundred years, but no major development took place of the port itself till the mid-1800’s, with the construction of a breakwater to provide better shelter for ships during heavy seas. The amount of Mgarr property for sale has soared in recent times, due to its location and views over the bay towards the main island of Malta, with farm houses, townhouses, apartments and flats offered for sale by Frank Salt Real Estate Limited.

The ferry terminal was rebuilt in the early 21st century. Mġarr is the largest fishing village on Gozo. A picturesque yacht marina is incorporated into the harbour and port area. Standing sentinel to the town of Mġarr is Fort Chambray, built in 1749 by the Knights of St. John. Mġarr has retained its olde-worlde charm to this day and is very popular once again as several restaurants and pubs have opened here, cashing in on its picturesque location of being the first place greeting all visitors to Gozo.

The town’s festa is the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady and held annually on the 23rd of August.
