Hans Kluge, the World Health Organisation’s regional director for Europe had nothing but words of praise for Malta, as the islands were recognised for their sterling effort when it comes to dealing with the current global COVID-19 pandemic.
“Malta is on the right track and an example to follow” tweeted Hans Kluge on Saturday 28 March 2020.
Since the first cases of the coronavirus in Malta were announced earlier in March, Malta has adopted stringent measures to combat a significant outbreak on the islands. The government has been introducing measures regularly in a bid to spread out contagion and avoid overwhelming the health services. It has blocked all flights and closed all non-essential shops, non-essential services, bars, restaurants, and gyms, amongst others. Meanwhile, all schools and educational establishments will remain closed until the next scholastic year. People over the age of 65 years, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses are also to stay at home as a preventative measure.
Malta has also undergone a major testing campaign, swabbing close to 6,000 people in a matter of three weeks, one of the highest per capita in Europe.
